Next year marks the 500th anniversary of “the discovery” of Florida by Ponce de Leon. This blog will feature a series of looks at Ponce and his travels.
In reality, Ponce did NOT discover La Florida. There were two maps of Florida (above is 1511 Abdres Morales map) and Cuban fisheremn and slave hunters visited the Florida coast. Ponce proved that Florida was NOT an island but part of North America.
And this was an essential fact for Ponce de Leon to try to colonize Florida under his name
